Sanrio, a beloved Japanese pop culture icon, is known for its iconic character Hello Kitty, alongside a variety of other ‘kawaii’ characters. The company sought to transform their website into more than just an online store, desiring a space where fans could immerse themselves in the brand’s world. The goal was to blend e-commerce with entertainment, offering content such as games, wallpapers, character stories, social media feeds, and information about events like the Hello Kitty Café.
The existing website lacked the playful, engaging feel that Sanrio is famous for, leading to a siloed experience for both customers and fans. The redesign focused on infusing the site with the charm and joy of Sanrio’s characters, including Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, and Gudetama. Custom character pages were created to showcase each character’s unique personality, featuring fun elements like memory games, origami tutorials, and user-generated content sections. Additionally, an events calendar and café truck tracker seamlessly integrated with the online experience, encouraging fans to connect both digitally and offline.
The result was a complete redesign that transformed the site into a vibrant hub where content, commerce, and community could converge. Sanrio’s new platform saw impressive results, including a +173% increase in revenue year-over-year and a +132% increase in transactions. By blending UX Design with Visual Design, the project elevated the online experience, allowing users to engage with the brand in a fun, memorable, and interactive way.
